Canine influenza is caused by the canine influenza virus and is a relatively new illness in dogs. Since most dogs have not encountered the virus before, their immune systems cannot adequately respond, resulting in many becoming infected upon exposure. The virus spreads through respiratory secretions and contaminated items such as surfaces, bowls, collars, and leashes. It can persist on surfaces for up to 48 hours, on clothing for up to 24 hours, and on human hands for up to 12 hours.
Dogs can transmit the virus before showing any symptoms, meaning a dog that appears healthy can still infect others. Infected dogs exhibit coughing, fever, and a runny nose, which are similar to the symptoms of kennel cough.
There is a vaccine available for canine influenza; however, it is not currently recommended for every dog. Consult your veterinarian to determine if the vaccine is suitable for your dog.
